FAQ

WHAT IS A DONOR ADVISED FUND?

A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is a philanthropic vehicle that is maintained and operated by a 501c3 public charity.  A donor-advised funds allow donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax benefit, and then recommend grants from the fund over time; it is like a charitable bank account.

All contributions made to your DAF account are tax-deductible contributions.  The contribution is then invested into impact portfolios and contributors use that money to grant out to charities of their choice over time.   As you are deciding which great organizations to give to, your money can grow tax free in investment vehicles.

HOW IS IMPACT CHARITABLE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER DAFS?

A small portion of the billions of dollars in DAFs are invested in alignment with the donor’s charitable purposes.  Unfortunately, the result is the DAF investment portfolio may create negative impacts that counter the donor’s positive philanthropic efforts.  Impact Charitable believes impact investing is the solution to this dichotomy.

We believe money set aside for charity should be invested in ways that align with the donor’s philanthropic goals.  We work with our donors to achieve their desired impacts through grants, targeted impact investments, and publicly traded ESG investments.

I HAVE AN EXISTING DONOR ADVISED FUND; CAN I TRANSFER IT?

It can be easy to move your existing donor advised fund to Impact Charitable.  As we say, “Roll over your DAF for Impact!”  The process involves opening a DAF with us and then requesting a grant from your existing donor advised fund and using the grant to fund your new DAF. Contact us for support.

CAN I PULL RETURNS FROM THE INVESTMENTS OUT OF MY DONOR ADVISED FUND?

Because the assets in the donor advised fund have been donated, they cannot be transferred back to you for your personal gain.  However, the great news is the returns generated from your impact investments will allow you to ultimately give more away!

And don’t forget, you are doubling your impact: first through the investment, and then through the grants you can give with the investment returns.

HOW ARE FUNDS INVESTED WHILE ONE DECIDES HOW TO MOBILIZE THE ASSETS?

100% OF DOLLARS WILL BE DEDICATED TO MAXIMIZING IMPACT.

You are doubling your impact: first through the investments and grants you can make through Impact Charitable and with any assets waiting to be deployed. All dollars at Impact Charitable are invested in impact-focused portfolios, maximizing impact while generating a return.

ARE THERE MINIMUMS OR RESTRICTIONS FOR DONATIONS, GRANTS, OR OTHER INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES

As a nonprofit donor-advised fund and impact investing services provider, we offer a suite of tools, including impact investments, special purpose funds, grants and direct cash transfer programs. We do not have a minimum size for making grants.

We understand the opportunities and constraints of operating as an impact-first investor and grantor and work with our partners to understand the impact they want to make and then recommend the best tools to accomplish that mission. Impact Charitable has utilized grants to nonprofits and mission-based for profit entities, direct investments as equity and debt, as well as utilizing income-sharing agreements and direct cash transfers.

CAN A DAF BE FUNDED BY MORE THAN ONE DONOR?

Yes – A DAF can accept donations from more than one donor. Impact Charitable believes in the power of bringing like-minded philanthropists and investors together to increase impact.

DO YOU HAVE ANY MINIMUMS OR RESTRICTIONS?

All dollars in DAFs at Impact Charitable are targeted for impact.  They are not our dollars or the donors dollars anymore. They are our community’s dollars. If you plan to give away all of your funds in a year, that is fine with us.  If you want to move all your funds into impactful investments for ten years, that is great too.
